UPDATE | Kidnapping suspect denied bond

AIKEN, S.C. (WRDW/WAGT) -- The suspect accused of stealing a car with a 5-year-old inside will was denied bond on Friday. after being denied bond. Joseph Johnson faces charges of kidnapping, larceny and more.

June Girolamo is a parent and grandparent, and she said this should be a big warning for parents.

"You can't be too careful these days," Girolamo said.

Girolamo said a parent can be living their worst nightmare because of a simple mistake.

"It's very frightening I couldn't imagine coming out and finding my car gone and my child gone," Girolamo said. "I mean my world would be shattered."

But that is what happened to one mom at a Circle K gas station in Aiken.

Aiken County Sheriff's Office said one mom went inside the gas station and left her keys in her jeep along with her five year old child, but when she came out both were gone.

"They have intentions of stealing the car or maybe stealing the child, who knows these days," Girolamo said.

Deputies said Johnson was seen taking the jeep, but he didn't get far with it. The car was found a half a mile from the Circle K undamaged and the kid unharmed. Deputies found Johnson shortly after and arrested him.
He appeared in court today. Johnson was already on probation with an ankle bracelet. The judge denied his bond.

"People are crazy nowadays," Girolamo said.

In this case, Girolamo said this mom was lucky.

"I see that it's convenient, but I can never see any excuse to leave my child in the car. convenient or not," Girolamo said.

8:00 p.m.

AIKEN COUNTY, S.C. (WRDW/WAGT) -- Deputies say a suspect is in custody after stealing a car with a 5 year old in the back seat.

Law enforcement say around 4:10 p.m. Joseph Bryan Johnson was seen stealing a Jeep Patriot from the Circle K at the intersection of Banks Mill Road and East Pine Log road.

A 5 year old was in the back seat at the time, according to deputies.

They say, the vehicle was found at the intersection of Banks Mill and Wildhaven Drive along with the child, who was unharmed.

Deputies, officers from the Aiken Department of Public Safety along with the Aiken County Bloodhound team found Johnson on Wildhaven Drive where was taken into custody.

AIKEN COUNTY, S.C. (WRDW/WAGT) -- Investigators are searching for a kidnapping suspect near Wagener Road at Banks Mill Road.

The sheriff's office said a vehicle was stolen from the Circle K at Banks Mill and East Pine Log Road with a 5-year-old inside.

The car was left on the side of Banks Mill Road with the child safely in it, according to the sheriff's office.

The call came in around 4:09 p.m.
