UPDATE | Passengers recovering after deadly crash involving taxi cab on Wrightsboro Road

11:15 a.m.

COLUMBIA COUNTY, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) -- The passengers of the taxi cab involved in a deadly crash on Wrightsboro Road are recovering in the hospital.

Axel McLean and Irene Cangelosi were transported to Augusta University Medical Center for treatment. McLean is listed in good condition, and Cangelosi is listed in fair condition.

The Columbia County Sheriff's Office said the taxi driver, Monika Christa Lowe, died in the crash.

Abraham Mohammad Mazhar was charged with failure to yield while turning left, vehicular homicide in the second degree, and marijuana possession Thursday and booked into jail. He was released on bond around 8 p.m. Thursday.



9:15 a.m.

COLUMBIA COUNTY, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) -- A man accused in a deadly crash on Wrightsboro Road is no longer booked into the Columbia County Jail.

Abraham Mohammad Mazhar, was charged with failure to yield while turning left, vehicular homicide in the second degree, and marijuana possession Thursday and booked into jail.

The Columbia County Sheriff's Office said Mazhar posted bond at 8:01 p.m. Thursday.

Investigators said Mazhar tried to turn left onto Hamilton Road into the path of a taxi and the taxi hit the right side of his car.

According to the sheriff's office, after the crash, the taxi continued east and overturned down an embankment on the south shoulder.

The Columbia County Sheriff's Office said the taxi driver, Monika Christa Lowe, died in the crash. The crash happened at around 1:04 p.m.

Two passengers were in the taxi with Lowe at the time. They've been identified as Axel McLean and Irene Cangelosi. Both were transported to Augusta University for treatment.

5:39 p.m.

COLUMBIA COUNTY, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) -- The taxi driver killed in the crash on Wrightsboro Road Thursday afternoon has been identified.

The Columbia County Sheriff's Office said Monika Christa Lowe died after being hit by a car at the intersection with Hamilton Road. Her taxi overturned and went down into an embankment. The crash happened at around 1:04 p.m.

Two passengers were in the taxi with Lowe at the time. They've been identified as Axel Mclean and Irene Cangelosi. Both were transported to Augusta University for treatment.

The driver of the second car, Abraham Mohammad Mazhar, has been charged with failure to yield while turning left, vehicular homicide in the second degree, and marijuana possession.

The taxi was traveling east on Wrightsboro Road when Mazhar was stopped facing west on Wrightsboro Road. Investigators said Mazhar tried to turn left onto Hamilton Road into the path of the taxi and the taxi hit the right side of his car.

3 p.m.

COLUMBIA COUNTY, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) -- The Columbia County Sheriff's Office has said the driver killed in the crash on Wrightsboro Road was a Speedy Cab Company taxi driver.

The names of the taxi driver and the two passengers are not known at this time. The passengers were transported to Augusta University, according to the Columbia County Sheriff's Office.

The sheriff's office said Abraham Mohammad Mazhar, 25, of Grovetown was driving the other car involved, a white 2010 Acura.

The taxi was traveling east on Wrightsboro Road when Mazhar was stopped facing west on Wrightsboro Road. Investigators said Mazhar tried to turn left onto Hamilton Road into the path of the taxi and the taxi hit the right side of his car.

According to the sheriff's office, after the crash, the taxi continued east and overturned down an embankment on the south shoulder.

The Columbia County Sheriff's Office has not said what and if any charges will be filed.

2 p.m.

COLUMBIA COUNTY, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) -- One person has died in a crash on Wrightsboro Road.

Two cars crashed and two people were injured, one has died, the sheriff's office said. Wrightsboro Road is down to one lane at this time.

The crash happened at around 1:04 p.m. at the intersection of Wrightsboro and Hamilton Road, according to the Columbia County Sheriff's Office.

1:20 p.m.

COLUMBIA COUNTY, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) -- Helicopters have been called to the scene of a crash on Wrightsboro Road at Hamilton Road in Grovetown, Columbia County dispatch said.

The crash was called in at around 1:15 p.m. Thursday as a rollover with at least three people trapped in the vehicle.
